There was dispute over content of 'Patiala House' trailer: Advani

There was dispute over content of 'Patiala House' trailer: Advani

By Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai, Dec 30 (IANS) Nikhil Advani had a difference of opinion with the rest of his team over the content of the first trailer of Akshay Kumar-starrer "Patiala House" as a result of which there was delay in getting it ready for being attached to "Tees Maar Khan".

"All I'll say is, there was some dispute over the content. 'Patiala House' is not a comedy and I didn't want to pitch it as a comedy. My biggest compliment was when Rishi Kapoor (who plays Akshay's father) called up to say, 'You've hit a sixer with your first trailer," said Advani.

When Advani visited a suburban theatre to watch TMK on Friday to check out his own film's hero's latest offering. Nikhil wanted to see the first trailer of his own film "Patiala House" that was attached to "Tees Maar Khan". But the trailer of "Patiala House" was missing from the film.

"All the prints of the trailers for the Dolby theatres could't be ready in time. So only about 70 percent of the Dolby theatres could show the trailer of 'Patiala House' with 'Tees Maar Khan'. Unfortunately, I landed up in one of the theatres that didn't have my trailer attached to the film. Can you imagine? The world saw it. I couldn't," said Advani.

Was it a last-minute decision to peg the "Patiala House" trailer to "Tees Maar Khan"?

"No no. We had decided long ago to attach our first trailer to 'Tees Maar Khan'. Akshay is a co-producer on both projects. Since 'Patiala...' is not a comedy, we decided we'd wait for the release of 'Tees Maar Khan' before starting the campaign," said the director.

Akshay admits "Patiala House" takes him into another mood away from the comic.

"There is only some black humour in 'Patiala House'. Otherwise it's a very dramatic story of a Sikh father who thinks it's unpatriotic of his British-Indian son to play cricket for the British team against India… Yes, there were creative differences over what the first trailer should look like. I am not just the actor on the project. I am the producer as well," said Akshay.

Akshay's 'Patiala House' role inspired by Monty Panesar

Akshay's 'Patiala House' role inspired by Monty Panesar

Mumbai, Dec 28 (IANS) In his next film "Patiala House", Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar will be seen essaying a role which has been inspired by England cricket team's Sikh member Monty Singh Panesar.

In "Patiala House", Akshay will be seen as Parghat Singh Kahlon, a British citizen whose dream is to be a pace bowler.

The film is being directed by Nikhil Advani and also stars Anushka Sharma, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. It is slated to release in Feb next year.

Akshay Kumar plans holiday in Goa for Twinkle Khanna birthday

Akshay plans holiday in Goa for Twinkle's birthday

By Radhika Bhirani

New Delhi, Dec 28 (IANS) A family holiday is the only thing on Akshay Kumar's mind after the release of "Tees Maar Khan". So the Bollywood star is off to Goa to celebrate his wife Twinkle's 36th birthday Wednesday as well as ring in the New Year with a bang.

"I am going to Goa with my family for nine days and I will just enjoy myself. We will be celebrating Tina's (Twinkle) birthday there first and then party on New Year's Eve," Akshay told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The action star, whose cookery game show "MasterChef India" on Star Plus came to a grand end last week, says he makes sure he chalks out adequate family time every year to take Twinkle and their eight-year-old son Aarav.

"You need to strike the right balance between work and family. I manage it very carefully. My family understands the nature of my work and never bothers me when I am working. So when I am on a holiday, I never give them a chance to complain and I just have fun," he said.

He also makes sure to pamper his wife once every year.

"I like to take breaks between my projects and once every year, I take a slightly long break. At that time, I just keep a globe in front of my wife and I ask her to choose whichever destination she wants to go for a holiday, and that's where we head! She allows me complete freedom, so I can do at least this much for her," said the dutiful husband.

It was an average year for Akshay with films like "Housefull", "Khatta Meetha", "Action Replayy" and "Tees Maar Khan", apart from his presence on the small screen as the host and judge of "MasterChef India". He says the TV show was a "great learning experience" as it was not just a chance for him to get a step closer to the masses, but also a chance for him to pick up new cookery tips.

"I met so many people through this show and learnt so much. For the first time I heard of cooking fish in curd and mustard...I picked up many such new combinations and ingredients.

"I could relate to their emotions because I also come from the same background. I could understand their feeling of staying away from home for a long time and could understand their needs in their quest for success...," said the 43-year-old, who lead a simple life in Chandni Chowk in New Delhi before he became a chef in Bangkok and then finally movedg to filmdom with "Saugandh" in 1991.

The actor, best known for his action stunts in Bollywood, says he is ready to be back with a second season of the show.

"I hope so that the channel would like to do a second season of 'Masterchef India'. I don't know yet, but Star Plus and I share quite a good rapport and hopefully we will return with the second season. I am all for it," he said.

After the holiday, Akshay is looking forward to the release of "Patiala House", the official trailer of which has been released with "Tees Maar Khan". Following that, he will begin shooting for Anees Bazmee's "Thank You".

I may contribute to Akshay's film again: Pakistani rapper Bohemia

I may contribute to Akshay's film again: Pakistani rapper Bohemia

By Alkesh Sharma

Chandigarh, Dec 27 (IANS) US-based Pakistani rapper Bohemia, who collaborated with Akshay Kumar in "Chandni Chowk To China" for the snazzy version of the title track, is expecting to ink another deal with the Bollywood star.

"Last month I had a meeting with Akshay bhai again. Hopefully, I will again contribute in his another film. Talks are on with many other filmmakers and very soon things will be finalised," Bohemia told IANS.

"My fan base started in America and now whatever I get from outside is an added bonus. Now Bollywood is helping me. Akshay Kumar approached me for 'Chandni Chowk to China' and I could not say no as I am his big fan," he said.

Bohemia feels hip-hop or rap is not culture or society bound.

"Hip-hop and rap is something that represents a whole culture. In other forms of music there are many restrictions and you are compartmentalised into certain compositions. But rap is absolutely free, you are just naked in front of your audience and that is the real test of any musician's abilities.

"I have many fans. I do not know the reason why they are so impressed with me as I never do anything to impress anybody. I just go to the stage and scream my heart out.

"I am never bothered about my looks and clothes like other singers. I think that rap represents a culture and most of the youngsters easily relate to it."

Born as Roger David in Karachi, Pakistan, Bohemia shifted to the US when his parents decided to migrate there 14 years ago. He is now based in California. Bohemia's grandfather had converted from Sikhism to Christianity.

Talking about his fan following in India, he said: "Whenever I come to India, there is a huge queue of youngsters outside my hotel room and at the venues. I like to take out time for them and teach them about hip-hop and rap music. Hopefully, in future I would find more time to interact with youngsters and some concrete planning is on my cards," he said.

Bohemia, a big fan of Mirza Ghalib, feels rap is fast picking up in India.

"Rap is a cool quotient for kids. I do not find any difference between Indian kids and those from other countries. Kids in Europe and America are also doing the same thing. It took about 25 to 30 years for rap music to develop in America. In India, you just wait for another five years," said the singer.

Bohemia became an instant hit in 2003 with his first album "Vich Pardesan De" and followed it with "Pesa Nasha Pyar" and "Da Rap Star".

Talking about his inspiration, Bohemia said: "I was a mamma's boy and I was only 16 when my mom passed away. I was a dejected teenager in a new country.

I did not even know the language. I wanted to leave the school and home. I wanted to kill myself.

"I was on streets, running here and there, struggling in life. I did not really trust anyone. I was very blunt. The anguish, struggle and difficult phase were my inspiration. I started becoming friends with black Americans who are very good in rap. I learned many things like the English language from them," said Bohemia.

He is not too happy with the DJ culture and said: "DJs don't have knowledge of music, they are only doing mixtures. In India, we do not have DJ culture; we are just copying what we are seeing in the west. For making good music, we have to be creative."

Lucknow's Pankaj Bhadouria wins 'MasterChef India'

Akshay's New Year act ahead of Christmas!

Akshay's New Year act ahead of Christmas!

By Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai, Dec 25 (IANS) Everyone wondered why Akshay Kumar dedicated his performance at Reliance Broadcast Network's Big Star awards held here to the New Year when it wasn't even Christmas time!

It turned out that Akshay's performance Tuesday night was targeted at being telecast on New Year's eve on a channel. But to the nominees who were present at the venue of the awards, it did appear odd that Akshay was singing and dancing about the New Year nine days in advance.

Said one of the stars present at the awards, "It was quite funny, really. Akshay was welcoming the year 2011 on Dec 21. We all wondered if he was trying to prove he was ahead of his times."

When contacted, Tarun Katial, Chief Executive Officer of Reliance Broadcast Network, said, "Akshay's New Year gig was part of his 'Tees Maar Khan' act. Since his performance was going to be part of the telecast of our awards on New Year's eve we decided to include it."

Incidentally, live performances at other awards functions, if targeted at a specific date, are recorded separately from the function.

Said Akshay: "The New Year bit was part of my 'Tees Maar Khan' act. Anything for my film. Also, Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan came and joined me on stage for an impromptu jig. After that, time ceased to matter for me. I didn't care if it was Christmas or New Year."

First promo of Patiala House catches your eye

First promo of 'Patiala House' catches your eye
By Taran Adarsh, December 23, 2010 - 13:35 IST

The moment you think of Akshay Kumar, images of his comic entertainers conjure up in front of your eyes. That Akshay is synonymous with comedy is well known by now. And once expects his next release, PATIALA HOUSE, to be a rib-tickling entertainer as well. But the first promo of the film catches you completely unaware. It tilts towards strong emotions. It tugs at your heartstrings.

The conflict between the father and son [the roles are enacted by Rishi Kapoor and Akshay] comes across extremely well in the promo and if the film is as impressive as its first promo, then Nikhil Advani would be credited for getting him back to serious roles after a hiatus. Besides the volatile relationship between the father and son, PATIALA HOUSE also catches your eye because it talks of cricket, which is the favourite sport of Indians.

Nikhil made a terrific debut with KAL HO NAA HO and seems like the talented director returns to narrate a strong emotional story in PATIALA HOUSE.

The promo of the film is out on Bollywood Hungama. Enjoy!

When Katrina Kaif hit Akshay Kumar hard

When Katrina hit Akshay hard

New Delhi, Dec 22 (IANS) Many feel Katrina Kaif is a delicate darling, but her "Tees Maar Khan" co-star Akshay Kumar doesn't think so.
"We were shooting for the song 'Bade dilwala' and Katrina got so involved in her dance that she actually hit me hard with her elbow. The impact was such that the shooting had to be stalled for two hours," Akshay told reporters here Wednesday.

The actor revealed this during the promotional tour of "Tees Maar Khan" in the capital. He was here with Katrina and director Farah Khan for the film that releases Friday.

Both the stars were greeted with much fanfare. They put their best foot forwad and wowed fans with an impromptu yet sizzling performance of the hit item number "Shiela ki jawani" from the romantic comedy.

"When we shoot for any song, there are often many cuts but I enjoy performing in front of live audiences because the response makes me feel good," Akshay said after his performance.

These days, Katrina is often heard talking in Hindi and she happily obliged when her fans asked her to do so at the event.

Akshay and Katrina also fulfilled the demand of their younger fans by happily dancing with them to the tune of "Bade dilwala".

Not only that, when Akshay spotted a little girl crying in the crowd as she couldn't reach the stage, he immediately called her and cheered her up by dancing along with her and giving a peck on her cheek.

Akshay Kumar gives Bollywood gyaan to Katrina on TMK promotional tours

Akshay Kumar gives Bollywood gyaan to Katrina on TMK promotional tours

By Subhash K. Jha, December 18, 2010 - 10:57 IST.

Nowadays thanks to the promotional tours and events for their new film together, Akshay Kumar is spending a lot of time with Katrina Kaif. And we can safely say it's time well spent for Katrina. Akshay is constantly enhancing Katrina's knowledge of Hindi films, their titles and other trivia.

By now it's common knowledge that Katrina is not quite clued into the nuances and titles of Hindi cinema. Her co-star Akshay Kumar, who prides himself for being just the opposite and is a veritable encyclopaedia of filmy titles and other trivia, has found an ingenious method of educating his co-star. He plays Dumb Charade with Katrina providing her signs and hints from commercial Hindi films as clues.

And boy, is Katrina getting clued in!

Lets hear it, Sheila ki zubaani (voice). "I've to admit I couldn't have hoped for a more fun teacher than Akshay. I come from a place where I can't gush about how I grew up on a staple diet of Sholay and Mughal-e-Azam. Akshay knows it all. He is completely clued into the cult of potboilers and can mimic every actor and act out every famous sequence. Being with him over the last few weeks, I am finally getting knowledgeable about Hindi movies."

The games of Dumb Charade are being played between bouts of promotion on cars and flights in several cities across the country. Akshay and Katrina have hired a private plane for the 12-city 25-day tour.

"So we get a lot of time to play Dumb Charade. By the time the promotions for Tees Maar Khan are over, I think I'll be an expert on Bollywood trivia," Katrina has her fingers crossed.

The education works both ways. While Akshay acts out scenes from Hindi films during Dumb Charade, Katrina mimes magical moments from Hollywood films for Akshay.

"So I guess we are both learning on the job," she chuckles.

Akshay Kumar cancelled Dubai trip due to back problem

Akshay cancelled Dubai trip due to back problem

By Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai, Dec 16 (IANS) Akshay Kumar was forced to cancel his Dubai trip to promote his forthcoming comedy "Tees Maar Khan" because of his chronic back problem.
While wife Twinkle rushed Akshay to the doctors Tuesday afternoon, Akshay's co-star Katrina Kaif left for the Dubai lap of the film's promotion all alone.

Apparently Akshay was insistent that he join Katrina for her trip to Dubai. But Twinkle put her husband under house-arrest, as this was not an isolated back pain.

Akshay first suffered a back problem while doing a stunt sequence in "Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi" in 1996. It confined him to bed rest for almost three months.

Again, Akshay's back trouble recurred last year while shooting for Sajid Khan's "Housefull". He was advised surgery but Akshay opted for water therapy. It took him to Germany and he came back apparently fully cured.

"It was the rigorous travel by plane and cars for the promotion of his new film that caused Akshay's back problem again," said a source.

While the whirlwind tour of Dubai had to be cancelled, Akshay insisted he would leave for the London lap of his promotional tour Tuesday night.

Twinkle confirmed that Akshay was better and that he left for London Tuesday night itself to promote "Tees Maar Khan" there.

Akshay Kumar son next Khiladi in making?

Akshay Kumar's son next 'Khiladi' in making?

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) Bollywood action hero Akshay Kumar's son Aarav seems to be walking in his father's footsteps already! The eight-year-old bagged three medals at a Karate tournament Monday.

"I'm the proudest dad in India today! My son just won three medals in his annual Karate tournament," Akshay, a black-belt in martial arts, posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Aarav won a gold medal for his kicks, and a silver medal each for his squats and combat fighting. Though Akshay's genes could well be the reason behind Aarav's accomplishment, the actor credits his wife Twinkle Khanna for their son's success.

"I must say that Aarav's gold medal is all thanks to my wife. She gave him extra training everyday at home for the last one month and he thanked her with an outstanding gold medal in return. He may have my genes but he definitely has his mother's fighting spirit," wrote Akshay.

Akshay and Twinkle tied the knot in 2001, and Akshay is still quite vocal about his love for her.

"Tina (Twinkle's real name) I love you and I'm so proud of our son," he tweeted.

One wonders if later Aarav will take the Bollywood route to fulfil his love for action, just as his father did with films like "Khiladi" and "Mohra".

I always crave for a big hit Akshay Kumar Interview

I always crave for a big hit: Akshay Kumar (Interview)

By Dibyojyoti Baksi

Mumbai, Dec 1 (IANS) Akshay Kumar's last two outings - "Khatta Meetha" and "Action Replayy" - failed to make the cash registers jingle. This hasn't dampened the Bollywood star's spirit but he admits he is craving for a big hit and hopes his "Tees Maar Khan" will hit bull's eye.

"If you follow my career graph, there have been a lot of ups and downs. It doesn't matter. I am not desperate, but, yes, I crave for a big hit all the time because I work very hard. I release around four films a year. I work very hard in each and every film," Akshay told IANS in an interview.

His last release was "Action Replayy" and the 43-year-old star feels either the screenplay or his retro look in "Action Replayy" couldn't connect with the audience.

" 'Action Replayy' didn't work. It couldn't connect with the audience. I tried to reason out and I think it would be because of the look or because of the screenplay," said Akshay, who is also known for his comic timing. He tickled the funny bone with movies like "Hera Pheri", "Singh is Kinng" and "Namastey London".

Right now he is looking forward to his action-packed fun film "Tees Maar Khan", which is scheduled for a Christmas release. Director Farah Khan is presenting him as a conman.

"This is a fun character, full of enjoyment. He (the character) is a conman and so there is a lot of mischief. The character is actually very shrewd. He always tries fooling people because he wants to make it big. He never does anything himself; he makes people do things for him. I haven't done such a fun and frolic role for a long time," said Akshay.

He is known for action movies like "Khiladi" and "Mohra" and says he would love to do serious movies but regrets there are no takers for such stories.

"If you ask me whether I would like to do a serious film, yes, I would love to do serious roles, serious characters. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. No one comes to see serious films. All look for fun films.

"I have tried doing something or the other and I will keep doing it if I get a good script. There are certain types of people who don't want straight or hard-hitting films. You have to understand your audience and keep on doing something - this is what my experience tells me. I haven't done any romantic film either.

"Also, I have to understand the business...I can't do a film to satisfy myself; I have to satisfy others because I am an entertainer," said Akshay.

Undeterred by failures, the actor has big plans for next year.

"I have not given up. Next year I am doing a very high-end action film with Prabhu Deva," said Akshay.
